Choosing Your First Pillar
The 9 Pillars follow a natural progression from idea to legacy. You do not have to follow the order strictly — but if you are unsure where to start, Foundation (Pillar 1) is the recommended entry point.
Start with Foundation if you:
- Are launching a new business or exploring a new direction
- Want to validate your idea before investing time and money
- Need clarity on who you serve, what you offer, and why it matters
Start with Framework if you:
- Already know your market and need to build the platform
- Are ready to set up your tech stack, branding, and systems
Start with any pillar if you:
- Have a specific gap you need to close (e.g., email marketing, funnel design, delegation)
- Want to go deep on one topic before working through the full curriculum
There is no wrong starting point. Foundation gives you the broadest base, but every pillar is designed to stand on its own. Start where the need is sharpest.

How Courses Are Structured
Every course in DirectoryUniversity follows the same consistent structure:
3 Modules Per Course
Each course contains 3 modules that progress from setup through execution to mastery:
| Module | Focus | What You'll Do |
|---|---|---|
| Module 1 | Setup | Build the foundation — concepts, context, and initial framework |
| Module 2 | Execution | Put it into practice — apply, test, and refine |
| Module 3 | Mastery | Go deeper — optimize, connect, and integrate |
4 Lessons Per Module
Each module contains 4 lessons:
- Lessons 1-3 are universal. They apply to any business type, any niche, any industry. The frameworks and concepts work whether you run a directory, a coaching practice, an e-commerce store, or a service business.
- Lesson 4 is niche-specific. It takes the same concepts from Lessons 1-3 and applies them directly to directory businesses on Brilliant Directories.
12 Lessons Per Course
That gives you 12 lessons total per course. At the pace of one lesson per day, you can complete a course in about two weeks. At one lesson per week, a course takes about three months.
Every Lesson Follows the Same Pattern
Each lesson teaches one named framework through a 9-step delivery process:
- Hook — Grab your attention with a real question or tension
- Frame — Introduce the named framework
- Walk — Step-by-step walkthrough with examples
- Apply — Guided exercise using the framework
- Check — Self-assessment diagnostic
- Share — Post your work and get feedback
- Connect — Link to prior and next lessons
- Transform — Articulate your before/after shift
- Ship — Walk away with a concrete artifact

Your First Lesson
Here is how to get the most from your very first lesson:
- Watch the full video without skipping ahead. The 9 steps build on each other.
- Do the Apply exercise (Step 4). This is where the real learning happens.
- Complete the Check diagnostic (Step 5). Be honest — it shows you where you actually stand.
- Ship something (Step 9). Even if it is rough. A shipped artifact beats a perfect plan every time.
If you purchased a Steps diagnostic ($10), you will receive a single lesson focused on Step 5 (Check). This is designed to help you assess where you stand on a specific topic before committing to the full course.
