Targeting by Tags & Custom Fields

Target visitors using tags and custom fields from your connected Email Marketing Platform (ESP). Show different widgets to different segments of your audience based on the data already stored in your ESP.

---

Step 1: Connect Your ESP

Popup supports targeting by contact data with the following platforms:

  • ActiveCampaign
  • MailChimp
  • Keap
  • HubSpot
  • Drift
  • Gist
  • Kit
  • Drip
  • Klaviyo
  • AWeber
  • GetResponse
  • Platformly

Connect your platform in the Integrations settings before creating a targeted widget.

---

Step 2: Create Your Widget

Build your widget as you normally would — choose a template or start from a blank canvas, add your content and form fields.

---

Step 3: Configure Display Rules

  1. Open Display Rules for your widget.
  2. Under Show Only If, add a condition that targets by contact data.
  3. Available targeting options depend on your ESP and may include:
  • Tags — show the widget only to contacts with (or without) specific tags.
  • Lists — target contacts on a particular list.
  • Stages — filter by pipeline or lifecycle stage.
  • Custom fields — match against any custom field value stored in your ESP.

---

How It Works

After a visitor subscribes through any Popup widget, their contact data is synced from your ESP into Popup automatically. On subsequent visits, Popup checks the visitor's tags, lists, and custom fields to decide which widgets to display.

This means targeting by contact data only works for known visitors — people who have already subscribed or been identified.

---

Identifying Visitors

Visitors are identified in two ways:

  1. Widget subscription — when a visitor submits a form through any Popup widget, they become a known contact.
  2. URL parameter — append ?conv_email={email} to any page URL. When a known contact lands on the page with this parameter, Popup recognizes them and applies contact-based targeting rules.

The URL parameter is useful for email campaigns — add it to your email links so returning subscribers see personalized widgets immediately.

---

Custom Fields Name Format

Custom field names in Popup's targeting rules match the format used by your ESP. If your ESP stores a field as company_size, use that exact name in the Display Rules condition. Check your ESP's field settings if you are unsure of the exact field name.
