The import system uses the Google images from Outscraper to add a photo for the listing. Google does not have logos in their maps API system only photos, so the main or first photo in Google is what is currently used for the main photo. This photo can be square, wide 16:9 or tall 9:16 depending on what the business owner has added or moved to the “front” image.
There is no cropping process in the image import process so whatever image is there is what is imported. This image is imported into both the profile photo and the profile logo as we do not know which one is turned on nor do we know what type of listing (personal or company) is selected for each listing. Adding this photo to both photo and logo ensures an image will show for any listing.
Sometimes users will have their own system of adding logos or images as square and notice a difference in image sizing compared to other listings in the search results. This is most prominent when users have the round profile image corners set as seen below.
Normally this round setting is only used for profile images of people as the face is normally round and centered and looks good in this framework. For image or logos, using this round presentation can result in logos being cutoff, or noticable difference when the width is different from the height as seen above. The first solution/ recommendation is to turn off the round setting and revert to the “standard” view. To do so, browse in your admin dashboard to Settings > Design Settings and in the first General tab go to the Additional Settings section. Click the “Member Profile Pages” dropown header to reveal additional settings and from the Profile Photo Style pick the “Standard Corners” option and be sure to save.
This will change the round corner to rounded square and make the tall or wide images a lot less noticeable as seen below.
Most chooose to stop there as an acceptable solution. Some prefer to have the images the same size for all listings, and occasionally some extremely odd sized images that are extremely tall or wide outside normal photo type sizes will force an image resave anyway to get them to look the same if this is desired.
To do so you will need to resave the photo for the listings from the front end. Login to the member in question and browse to the profile photo tab of the listing. Here you will see either or both of the profile photo and profile logo depending on what you have turned on for that membership level.
Currently the BD system does not allow cropping after upload. You will need to right click and save image to your desktop or other folder and then click the “Change Photo” button to reupload the image. For the profile photo, the system will allow you to crop the photo to a desired preset ratio of your choice, so if you have 1:1 ratio set you can crop the image to make square like the rest.
If you prefer the yearbook style 3:4 ratio you can set that preference in the Developer Hub > Image Settings section as seen below. For profile photo there is a drop down option for 1:1 or 3:4 as mentioned. But notice that for profile logos there is no option and it is set at an unchangeable “Open” ratio. This means the image when uploaded will retain its original ratio.
What that means for the upload for the logo, is unlike the profile photo where you saw the square crop ratio dragable area, when you go to upload the image into the Logo field, you will not have the option to crop the photo as seen below.
The image will keep the ratio that it is in just like our tool. Thus if your listings are set to be a “Company” and use the logo image vs a “Personal” listing that will use the profile photo, the only way to get the image to load as square is to download and crop to a square size first with an external tool of your choice and then reupload with that square ratio into the logo field.
Due to this limitation, we do have another plugin that is a cropping tool that allows this on the fly resizing both for the photo and the logo for both listing, posts or any other form image import without needing to save the photo or use external resizing tools. An example is seen below to get around these limitations.
If interested in that option you can purchase that here: DirectoryCrop. The only other option is to leave the image sized as is, and to alter the image presentation code for the search result to show a consistant square sizing regardless of photo size, keeping in mind that this would more than likely cut off portions of a wider or taller image to accomodate the desired sizing. Contact us or another marketplace developer to execute this option if this is preferred.
